I'm a student at Aditya Birla World Academy, and Artisan Impact is a project that is very personal to me.
For as long as I can remember, I have had a soft spot for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have always felt that they deserve more opportunities for their abilities and creativity to be seen and appreciated. At the same time, art has always been something I enjoy. I love the freedom that comes with creating something yourself and seeing an idea that was once in your head slowly turn into something real.
Artisan Impact grew from bringing these two things together. I started the project with the aim of using art to create a platform where these young artisans could express themselves and have their work appreciated by a much wider audience.
I didn't want the process to simply involve giving them a finished design and asking them to copy it exactly. Instead, I create simple designs that act as a starting point. The artisans then recreate them in their own way, choosing the colours they want and adding their own unique touches. I love that I can create one design and give it to several artisans, yet each finished artwork can have a completely different personality.
